ASTROgram: UnitedHealthcare to implement claim review for proton beam therapy

Effective November 14, 2010, UnitedHealthcare will be implementing post service claim review for proton beam radiation therapy (PBT) services. The review will be based on UnitedHealthcare’s Medical Policy on PBT. UnitedHealthcare has determined that PBT is proven for the treatment of arteriovenous malformations and melanoma of the uveal tract and is proven non-preferentially for the treatment of prostate cancer and intracranial and skull base tumors.
