According to a November 24, 2009, Baltimore-Washington Corridor Inc. article, Jaroslaw Hepel, M.D., has joined the radiation oncology staff at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.

A December 23, 2009, Washington Post article, announced that Parker Griffith, M.D., a congressman from Alabama’s 5th District and the first radiation oncologist in Congress, was switching from the Democratic  Party to the Republican Party. Darrel Ross, M.D., a radiation oncologist at St. John’s Cancer Center in Anderson, Ind., was featured in a December 28, 2009, The (Ind.) Herald Bulletin article on Indiana being ranked second in the nation for percentage of smokers in the state. Dr. Ross spoke on the challenges of treating lung cancer, when 85 percent of cases are directly related to tobacco exposure.

Several ASTRO members were named as Best Doctors in America 2009-2010 with the specialty of radiation oncology. Tarek Dufan, M.D., was featured in a December 16, 2009, story on KFYR-TV in Bismarck, N.D., on a University of Michigan study that found that giving patients hope can prevent them from getting on with their lives. Dr. Dufan disagreed with the study and said that hope is crucial to keeping patients alive in some situations.
